چکیده

Three naphthoquinone derivatives (plumbagin, juglone, and menadione) have been reported with antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties and could potentially be used as anticancer agents because they can provoke apoptosis. However, they are also strong oxidants and cause cytotoxicity and even necrosis, so they are only limited to experimental chemotherapeutic use. In order to understand their physical chemical properties, we used both Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) to study their absorption spectra in wave number ranges of 400~4000 cm and 6.6 ~ 92.4 cm. We also analyzed their characteristic absorption peaks, and assigned spectra peaks in IR range to their molecular structures. These data will be very useful in future studies of their pharmaceutical mechanisms.

Tissue mineral nutrient content in turions of aquatic plants: does it represent a storage function?

Turions are frost resistant, vegetative dormant organs produced by aquatic plants. Tissue N, P, K, Ca, and Mg content was estimated in turions of 5 rooting, non-carnivorous plant species of the genera Caldesia, Hydrocharis, and Potamogeton and in 7 rootless carnivorous plant species of the genera Aldrovanda and Utricularia, and compared with concentrations of these nutrients in ambient waters e...

Evaluating the adaptive evolutionary convergence of carnivorous plant taxa through functional genomics

Carnivorous plants are striking examples of evolutionary convergence, displaying complex and often highly similar adaptations despite lack of shared ancestry. Using available carnivorous plant genomes along with non-carnivorous reference taxa, this study examines the convergence of functional overrepresentation of genes previously implicated in plant carnivory. Gene Ontology (GO) coding was use...

Energetics and the evolution of carnivorous plants--Darwin's 'most wonderful plants in the world'.

Carnivory has evolved independently at least six times in five angiosperm orders. In spite of these independent origins, there is a remarkable morphological convergence of carnivorous plant traps and physiological convergence of mechanisms for digesting and assimilating prey. These convergent traits have made carnivorous plants model systems for addressing questions in plant molecular genetics,...

Molecular and functional evolution of class I chitinases for plant carnivory in the caryophyllales.

Proteins produced by the large and diverse chitinase gene family are involved in the hydrolyzation of glycosidic bonds in chitin, a polymer of N-acetylglucosamines. In flowering plants, class I chitinases are important pathogenesis-related proteins, functioning in the determent of herbivory and pathogen attack by acting on insect exoskeletons and fungal cell walls. Within the carnivorous plants...

Evolutionary ecology of carnivorous plants

Nicholas J. Gotelli Dept of Biology, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT 05405, USA. Carnivorous plants have fascinated evolutionary ecologists, botanists and horticulturists for centuries. Early investigators were reluctant to accept that plants could consume insects and other small invertebrates1; Darwin2 provided the first detailed experimental evidence for carnivory in several genera. Sin...
